Robert J. Havighurst was born in DePere, Wisconsin on June 5, 1900. He grew up in Ohio and Illinois where his father, a former Professor of History at Lawrence College in Wisconsin, served as a Methodist minister. He received his A.B. from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1921 and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the Ohio State University in 1924. Herbert Thelen was born in 1913 and grew up in Berkeley, California. He was married to Leonora Elizabeth Knox from 1937 until her death in 1977, and married to Sophia Lazarus from 1977 until her death in 2004. He had two children, David and Marian. He died in Laguna Woods, California in 2008.
